Professor Robert Thomas: "You can reduce the chances of cancer coming back if you continue to exercise"

All patients getting cancer treatment should be told to do two and a half hours of physical exercise every week, says a report by Macmillan Cancer Support.
Being advised to rest and take it easy after treatment is an outdated view, the charity says.Research shows that exercise can reduce the risk of dying from cancer and minimise the side effects of treatment.
The Department of Health says local initiatives can get people moving.
Macmillan's report, Move More, says that of the two million cancer survivors in the UK, around 1.6 million are not physically active enough.
Adult cancer patients and cancer survivors should undertake 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week, the reports says, which is what the Department of Health guidelines recommend.
In the report, the American College of Sports Medicine also recommends that exercise is safe during and after most types of cancer treatment and says survivors should avoid inactivity.

Getting active, the report says, can help people overcome the effects of cancer and its treatments, such as fatigue and weight gain.
"The evidence review shows that physical exercise does not increase fatigue during treatment, and can in fact boost energy after treatment.""It can also lower their chances of getting heart disease and osteoporosis.
"Also, doing recommended levels of physical activity may reduce the chance of dying from the disease. It may also help reduce the risk of the cancer coming back."
Previous research shows that exercising to the recommended levels can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurring by 40%. For prostate cancer the risk of dying from the disease is reduced by up to 30%.
Bowel cancer patients' risk of dying from the disease can be cut by around 50% by doing around six hours of moderate physical activity a week.
Ciaran Devane, chief executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, said physical activity was very important to the survival and recovery process.
"It doesn't need to be anything too strenuous, doing the gardening, going for a brisk walk or a swim, all count."
Traditionally cancer patients were told to rest after their cancer treatment, but the report says this approach could put cancer patients at risk.
Jane Maher, chief medical officer of Macmillan Cancer Support and a leading clinical oncologist said: "The advice that I would have previously given to one of my patients would have been to 'take it easy'.
"This has now changed significantly because of the recognition that if physical exercise were a drug, it would be hitting the headlines."
Martin Ledwick, head information nurse at Cancer Research UK, was a little more cautious.
"Anything that improves wellbeing and reduces treatment side effects for cancer survivors has to be a good thing.
"But the evidence that exercise has a bearing on survival is not conclusive. It is important to remember that no two cancer patients are the same, so rehabilitation programmes that include physical activity will need to be tailored to the individual."
A spokesperson from the Department of Health said it was vital that people with cancer are given the support to lead an active life.
"Physical activity and a healthy lifestyle can impact very positively on cancer outcomes and, as part of the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative, we are working with Macmillan to integrate physical activity services into cancer care pilot sites.
"Locally led initiatives such as Let's Get Moving are also well placed to signpost cancer patients to community-based physical activity opportunities."

Happy 48th Birthday Jamaica
Events a plenty to celebrate independence ... Jamaicans urged to wear national colours
Friday, August 06, 2010
Forty-eight years ago, on August 6, 1962, the British Union Jack was lowered inside the National Stadium, and for the first time, the Jamaican flag was hoisted signalling the birth of an independent nation.
Fast-forward to 2010 and Jamaicans are expected to go out in their numbers for this year's observances. The highlight of the celebrations are centred around capital city Kingston, however, throughout the island there will be events to mark the Independence anniversary. The major events in Kingston comprise the Independence Street parade and the Grand Gala.
A performance of the Maypole dance is expected since it is a traditional part of Independence celebrations.
Performances like these are expected at this year’s Independence day celebrations
The Parade is set to commence at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre and will move along a prescribed route through the city and will feature various uniformed and costumed groups as part of the convoy which is set to start at 12 noon.
The other major event is the Grand Gala at the National Stadium. Costumed groups, electrifying performers, traditional groups, festival song winners and marching bands are all expected to take to the stage to celebrate independence. In Kingston, the independence day activities will be capped by the Independence Street Dance in Half-Way-Tree.
Meanwhile, across the island a number of activities have been scheduled to mark the celebrations. Over in the second city, Montego Bay, the day's activities will commence with the Independence Day Parade at Sam Sharpe Square starting at 10:00 am, followed by the Western Jamaica Gala at the Dump Up Beach, in that city at 12 noon.
Other activities not directly related to the independence celebrations but taking place today include, the hip-hop dancehall show, Fully Loaded which takes place at The Old Coal Wharf Port Royal, and features Ricky Blaze, Tony Matterhorn, Bass Odyssey, Black Kat, Boom, Vertex, Sky Juice, Renaissance, ZJ Liquid, Bambino, DJ Shine, Flava Squad. Radio station, Fame FM hosts its Beach Fiesta at Sugarman's Beach, Portmore. For Jamaicans on the country's north coast, there is the party, Disturbia, Club Jamaica Jamaica in St Ann, featuring Elephant Man, Ishawna, Foota Hype, Bass Odyssey and DJ Pele. Lovers of old school music can also check out Yesterday, The Independence-Day Edition, to be held at Kingston's Mas Camp.
Jamaicans have been urged to wear the national colours — black, gold and green — as they go out to celebrate this independence day. This years celebrations are being stage under the theme I Believe in Jamaica.

Zumba Craze continues --Thousands of Zumbaholics at Rockefeller Plaza
A Thousand Zumba Fanatics Converged on Midtown Today. We Were There.

Though Beto happened upon the "Zumba style" by "accident" in the mid-1990s, Zumba officially began in 2001, combining hip-shaking Latin-inspired dance moves and aerobics. Now in more than 125 countries, it has a fan base that is almost cult-like in their devotion.
"We expected a big turnout," said Megan Kopf, the public relations director for Today, surveying the crowd. "But this is a really big turnout." (Still, it was nothing compared to a fitness convention in San Francisco, news anchor Natalie Morales told us, where a "Zumbathon" turned out over 150,000 people.)
The Zumba segment was pre-taped around 8:30 a.m., even though it would air after Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford took over at 10 a.m., due to noise constraints enforced on the program.
"Why aren't you Zumbaing with us?" Kathie Lee yelled at Megan as she made her way to the stage. Beto then entered, and the crowd started screaming his name.
Natalie leaned over: "He is like the rock star of the Zumba craze."
To begin, Beto and his team led Hoda, Kathie Lee, and correspondent Sara Haines in a rehearsal. He prompted the anchors and the crowd to wave their arms, thrust their pelvises, and shimmy. The last move was Hoda's favorite, she told me later.
Then they did it with the cameras rolling. During the taping Beto jumped off the stage and ran to Zumba in the middle of the fans who clamored around him.
Hoda and Kathie Lee came down from the platform sweating. As the crowd continued dancing, I asked the hosts if they were exhausted.
"We did two three minute bursts," Hoda began.
"Let me dab you," Kathie Lee interrupted, reaching up to Hoda's face.
"I know," Hoda laughed, continuing. "We did two three minute bursts and I feel like I could eat a Snickers bar and feel good."
"And you will," Kathie Lee added.
The co-hosts said they wouldn't be doing anymore dancing after that. Instead, as per their reputations, they'd be drinking. What would they be sampling?
"It's Winesday," Kathie Lee said. "I don't know; they like to surprise us. Red is better for your heart, so it will probably be white."
(They ended up sampling mojitos.)
After Hoda and Kathie Lee went inside, the crowd, at least two members of which had been there since 1 a.m., lingered. Alex Wunderlich, 42, and Valentina Molina, 33, both instructors, described themselves as Zumba "freaks" and "addicts," calling it "an epidemic."
"Meeting and seeing Beto or even just dancing with him is one of the things off my bucket list," Lorraine Trivone, 51, said. Trivone explained that she has a pacemaker, bad knees, and lost 90 pounds doing Zumba about a year ago: "It's the one thing that works for me."
As the participants were ushered off the plaza I heard cries of "flash mob." I turned around and asked a group of young instructors where they were headed. Bryant Park, they told me, and I followed along. As we walked around 5th Avenue, Iris Ivette, 20, turned to me.
"We have to Zumbafy you a little bit," she said, handing me a red rubber wristband. "Here is a Zumba bracelet." Most people on the Plaza wore brightly colored official Zumba gear, marked by the logo of a figure dancing. Some women bared their toned bellies, and wore low-hanging pants from which were dangling ribbons.
When we reached Bryant Park, the group gathered in front of the stage at one end of the lawn. No one seemed to know how the gathering had been organized. And then Beto and fellow Zumba celebrities Tanya Beardsley and Gina Grant emerged from 6th Avenue. The group flocked around them, clamoring to take pictures, grabbing at them.
"You can't even get close to Beto," a woman behind me said.
The crowd was told to move to the other side of the stage and gather at the tables in front of a fountain. When Beto's fans finally moved away from him, he stood on the fountain's edge and started an impromptu Zumba party. The group chanted the phrase "mueve la cadera" as music played quietly. After 15 minutes, authorities shut down the party, telling Beto permits were required to host such an event. The crowd shouted "boo" and began to chant the word "Zumba."
Handlers held onto Beto, Tanya, and Gina, who were once again mobbed by fans as they tried to leave. I was allowed to follow them into a cab where they were heading to their hotel.
"Today is a party," Tanya said.
As the cab approached Lexington Avenue and 51st Street, it got caught in traffic. Their hotel was only a block away, and Beto wanted to get out.
"We're going to go see if we can catch the Today Show segment," Tanya said.
